What’s happening to the music industry?

Mainstream media have been crying wolf about the decline of the music industry for the past decade. In reality, consumers are listening to more music than ever before.

So why the “sky is falling” mentality? Blame that on the major record labels. The uncertain state of the industry has led to various acquisitions and mergers, leaving only four major labels with non music ownership that cater to one thing: their shareholders. In the past, artists had to have their music released by one of these companies (or a similar, independent company) to have a successful career in the industry. Record labels would sign an artist, taking a large percentage of profits from the future release of the artist’s music on CD. For years, they’ve been controlling the news to have the public believe that file sharing killed music. They’ve been suing users who are sending the music they love to their friends and growing the fan base of their favourite artists.

Today, the development of digital file sharing technologies has changed the balance between record companies, songwriters, and performing artists. Sure, physical sales may be down, but digital audio — first illegal but no longer so — has permanently changed how people find, buy, and listen to music. The good news is that this has led to exponential growth in the number of independent artists producing and releasing music.

Pro Soul to the rescue: we’re an artist-focused, full service record label, ready to meet the demands of the emerging new music industry. We’re ahead of the curve: we let you keep control of your music and career, while assisting you with the latest techniques in connecting you with your audience.

So unless you want to be stuck in the past, Pro Soul is the company to be working with, because were different from every other label out there!

Why do i need a record label to help me?

To be a successful artist, you need to have fans. To have fans, you need to get out there! When you break it down, every aspect of your career comes down to your fans.

Not every artist is able or willing to make an effort to nurture fans. Many musicians simply want to play music – and that’s totally legit – so they may lack the skills, resources, or inclination to develop and foster their fan base.

Artists often hire a professional manage to their career, but they don’t hire a professional to manage their fans, too.

Instead of working alone, artists now have the opportunity to work with an experienced, professional organization – Pro Soul – to achieve their career goals.

How is Pro Soul different from every other record label out there?

We call Pro Soul a “record label”, but it’s really very different from traditional labels, especially the major ones.

We treat artists fairly. We don’t take any of the rights to your music or a cut of any of your future profits. What you earn is yours to keep. We simply get paid for the services we provide – and nothing more. So we won’t finance the production of your album or give you a huge signing bonus before we even start, but we also won’t take any of your profits to cover our costs – and then some – once you start making money. We also don’t need to own copyrights to your music to help your career, so unlike major artists, your record company won’t have control over your recordings! You will, as you should.

Over the past few years, we have been studying the change in what music lovers really want from artists, and how they want it. We can help ensure that you connect with them in the most effective way possible to create a long-lasting and profitable relationship.

And just as a warning: when signing with other labels, watch out for the fine print; “recoupable expenses” are not your friend. The other labels aren’t interested in you because they like you; they’re interested because you’re money to them. They won’t take that risk with you unless it’s going to pay back – out of your pocket, of course.

In a world of 360 deals that have music companies taking a cut of any and all profits an artist earns, Pro Soul is some fresh thinking that not only moves in the direction the industry is naturally going, it ensures we’ll be there for you for a long time to come when you need us most.

    How much will it cost?

Pro Soul artists pay a monthly subscription fee for our services. Think of it this way: you’re the owner of your music business, and we’re employees. Yes, we know; this isn’t standard in the industry. But the way things are going, a major change is overdue.

We offer a range of subscription packages; each includes different services that are customized for your needs and can be made to fit your budget. Since every artist is different, we even have a simple questionnaire for you to fill out so that we can recommend the right package for you. The bigger the package you choose, the more Pro Soul will do for you – and the faster we’ll do it. But don’t worry if you can’t afford our fanciest package; we’ll still be able to assist in getting your career going affordabley. Click here for our subscription options

What incentive does Pro Soul have to help further my career if you don’t work on commission like the rest of the industry?

Pro Soul operates in a industry where reputation is king.

Our business success is dependent on our reputation for providing excellent service in the best interests of our artists. Word of mouth is a powerful tool; if our artists are successful, we’ll be successful too. If they’re not, no one will ever hear about us.

Just check out the testimonials from our artists in the Why Us section!

That’s what’s in it for us. And were so confident you will be pleased with what your getting with us, we have no minimum subscription and you can cancel at anytime.

Why should i work with Pro Soul if i could sign a traditional record deal and get 6 figures in living and business expenses?

The answer is simple: read the news. Traditional labels are drastically cutting staff and cutting costs. Contrary to what they’re saying, and what the various others may tell you, they don’t want to sign artists that are not already successful and have established a large fan base.

We don’t recommend that you sign with a major label (see “How is Pro soul different from every other record label out there”), but if you’re looking for a big cash advance, major contract and international fame, you need to prove yourself in the industry first – without major label help. Pro Soul can work with you to do that right, without tying you down to contracts that lock in the rights to your music and prevent negotiations with other labels in the future.

Will Pro Soul work with any artist?

No, Pro Soul chooses only to work with talented, motivated artists who are committed to actively advancing their career. We’ll let you know if we don’t believe that Pro Soul is the right fit for you at this time. That said, we understand that even talented, motivated artists may find themselves in a rut, or not really know how to get their career going, so we can also provide services for you if this is the case.

So just apply – there’s no risk to you. All you have to do is subscribe and submit your materials (music, websites, etc). We’ll evaluate you and let you know if Pro Soul is able to work with you. And if not, we’ll gladly refund any fees in full.

What genres are you looking for?

We don’t discriminate based on genre; we’re open to working with any artist whose music deserves to be shared with the world, regardless of the style. If you specialize in a genre we don’t currently represent, and are have a pioneering spirit, our research experts will make sure we source what are currently the most effective avenues to promote your style of music and connect with the audience that will appreciate what your doing.

I don’t see very many artists on prosoulalliance.com. Is your entire roster listed?

At Pro Soul, we love good music by talented artists, and we choose to support our finest talent by featuring top performing artists on our Artists page. We only attach the Pro Soul name to our best artists, so if you’re not quite there yet; we won’t put you up there until you’re ready. Some artists also choose not to show their affiliations, so not all the artists we work with will be listed.

Once i sign, how do you make my music career successful?

This is a complex question as each artist is at a different stage of their career and each has different needs.

We start off by having a consultation with you in person or over the phone. This helps us to find out more about you, your music, talents and career goals, and to go over some initial suggestions on how to proceed next on a monthly basis and over the next year. Then we create a step-by-step plan of action that you are involved in and can monitor in detail using our career management system.

This basically involves assisting you, the artist, to not only find and connect with an international audience that will appreciate and support what you’re doing, but interact with that audience dynamically to develop a long-lasting relationship, and then monetize that relationship the way your diverse audience wants most so that you earn income. There are many techniques that facilitate that process, both online and offline, that we will talk about more on our blog

As needed, we consult with you regularly to evaluate and plan future action. It’s an organic, dynamic process during which you will see the results in terms of your music reaching more people and earning income.

I have made a good start in my career, so i don’t need someone to do everything; can i decide what i want to do and control?

Of course! Pro Soul will make informed professional recommendations, but ultimately, it is up to you what elements of your career you handle, and what Pro Soul takes care of for you. Each party’s expectations and responsibilities will be established at our initial consultation.

Are there obligations or contracts i have to sign in order to have Pro Soul represent me as my label?

Pro Soul will not usually ask you to sign any contracts, depending on the region you live. You own all the rights to your music and any future earnings. You won’t need an expensive lawyer to work with us (another way you save money). And you are free to sign deals with other companies; in fact, Pro Soul can even assist in making sure that you have significant negotiating power when dealing with other companies to get the best deal possible.

What are the terms when being represented by Pro Soul?

We don’t ask you to sign any contracts in most cases, so you’re still an independent artist. If you don’t feel like Pro Soul is the best option for you at any time, given your needs, goals, and budget, you’re free to stop your subscription. You can cancel at any time, with no penalty.

We’ll even make sure you have access to the sites and services that Pro Soul used for your career – or we can continue to manage them for a small monthly fee.

Can you guarantee that i will make xx amount of money or get xx number of fans within xx months if i subscribe as Pro Soul artist?

We pride ourselves on being straight-forward and honest with the artists we work with; we strive to protect all artists, who have long been taken advantage of in the music business!

The truth is, unfortunately, there’s no such guarantee in this industry, and anyone who suggests otherwise should be avoided. It will take time to generate a sustainable income from your music, and we keep up on the latest techniques to do so in a changing industry. If you do it on your own, you will waste a lot more of your money and time than you will with us!

But Pro Soul does offer a no obligation guarantee: if you’re not satisfied with our services you can cancel at any time, and we don’t have a minimum subscription, you can decide what works for your budget. You’ve got nothing to lose, and only a great career to gain.

Do i need to have a completed album (or at least some produced songs) in order to have Pro soul assist me?

No; actually, the earlier we start working with you, the better! We can start promoting you even while you’re creating your music, and we will help you make sure it’s done right, from the start.

But in order to promote you effectively down the road, part of the plan we create with you will require properly produced music. If you don’t have the means or the funding, or can’t achieve funding with our assistance to do this, it will naturally limit how much we can do for your music career.
